WELCOME TO WHEAL CALL!

Welcome to the 2026 Season at Wheal Call…

Happy New Year everyone!  Well, 2026 started with a bang for sure with Storm Goretti registering 111mph winds around Land’s End.  Sennen and Penzance took a terrible beating with roofs and trees down, roads closed and power out for days!  Thank goodness for wood burning stoves!!!  Now, as I write this towards the end of January, we still do not have any internet!

Amazingly, our redoubtable little cottage stared straight down the mouth of that storm and stood firm.  As we drove down the track our hearts were in our mouths.  Would we have a roof?  Would there still be a cottage??? But what an amazing place Wheal Call is, the only damage we had was lost gutters and downpipes and one roof tile!

Arriving after the storm to a lovely rainbow and precious little damage!

Winds of over 110 miles that just snapped this telegraph pole at the knees and took out our power and internet

Uncertain times ahead…

The UK government is talking about a £2.00/night Tourist Tax Levy, but we have no idea when this will start or how they intend to collect it.  They are also considering introducing further Business Rates Tax rises and a Holiday Let Registration Scheme with accompanying fees.  We will know more about these in the April 2026 Budget, but, again, we do not know when any new tax rises will come into effect.

Like everyone else in the UK hospitality industry, we have set our 2026 prices and we intend to stick to them unless the government drops a catastrophic bombshell in April! In this case, please rest assured that  we will inform you of any necessary price increase and give you the opportunity to cancel with no cancellation charges.

the cottage on the edge…..

Our redoubtable little, white-washed, granite cottage stands alone on the cliff top, below the South West Coastal Path, at Cape Cornwall. It overlooks the whole of Porthledden Bay with panoramic views of Cape Cornwall and The Brisons to the south, and Kenidjack Cliff Castle and the Kenidjack Valley to the north. Facing due west, it is enjoys the spectacle of breathtaking sunsets and the might of the Atlantic Ocean.

The cottage sleeps up to a maximum of 4 people.  It is full of character with exposed beams, wooden floors, granite walls and wood burning stoves to enchant you almost as much as the view.

Due to its position on the cliff and layout inside, Wheal Call is not suitable for children and we therefore do not allow children under 8 years of age.

More than a holiday… a true retreat!

Wheal Call was originally a Count House to the local mine and is located in a Designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, within the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The cottage is the perfect retreat from modern life, free from wifi, TV and mobile reception (though you can get 4G around the place if the atmospherics are good!).  It might lack certain modern technological conveniences, but the cottage is cosy and warm with two wood burning stoves, a modern kitchen and a walk-in, mains pressure shower!

Milky Way over Wheal Call and Cape Cornwall

Our guests love reconnecting with family and friends and enjoying the rich local history, wild natural surroundings, coastal walks and rock pooling in the bay below.

Sundowners on ‘the bench’ are special times to cherish and, if the sound of the sea hasn’t lulled you to sleep already, you can stay up into the night star-gazing under dark skies and marvelling at the Milky Way and shooting stars!

Welcoming dogs back to Wheal Call

A few years ago we had to make the sad decision to disallow dogs at Wheal Call after a series of stressful events including a flea infestation and damage to the furniture.

But Wheal Call is so beautifully positioned on the South West Coastpath for great walks with your dogs and we know how much it means to be able to holiday with your four-legged family member!

This Spring we trialled having dogs back at Wheal Call and were privileged to meet the most gorgeously gentle and well-behaved Tia, a standard poodle, who was the perfect guest and who melted our hearts.

The default position is that we still do not allow dogs at Wheal Call.  However, if you have a beautifully-behaved, clean, obedient, mature dog and think they would be suitable for Wheal Call, please get in touch by email to discuss and receive written permission for your dog to come on holiday with you.  Do remember that most beaches do not allow dogs between 10am and 6pm and you cannot leave your dog alone in the cottage.

The fee is a £60.00 and strict adherence to the rules set out opposite is required.

Rules for Dogs at Wheal Call

  • A single dog is allowed at Wheal Call for a fee of £60.00 following discussion and written permission.
  • Dogs are not allowed upstairs or on the sofas or armchairs! There is a gate at the bottom of the stairs.
  • Dogs must be well-trained and under control at all times.  The garden is not secure and members of the public walk past on the track above which is part of the South West Coast Path.
  • Reactive or aggressive dogs are not allowed.
  • Puppies or dogs under 1 year are not allowed.
  • Owners must bring their own dog bedding, baskets and towels.
  • Dogs must never be left in the cottage on their own.
  • All dogs must be flea and tick treated before they arrive! This is essential and non-negotiable!  We suffered a flea infestation which costs hundreds of pounds and 3 weeks to resolve and meant the loss of bookings and income! Proof of treatment is required (eg: receipt for medication or photo of treatment).
  • Muddy dogs must be washed off and dried in the courtyard before entering the cottage.
  • Dogs must be walked before arrival to avoid accidents when they first enter!
  • All dog mess must be bagged up and taken to the Dog Waste bins in the NT car park, not flicked into the undergrowth by the cottage.
  • An increased Security Deposit of £300.00 is required to be paid by bacs transfer and returned following your stay.
