For this latest body of work, renowned contemporary artist Kurt Jackson returned to the subject of his formative years, Cape Cornwall.
Painting the headland from all possible sides and aspects, he aimed to capture and celebrate this familiar St Just landmark through the seasonal, meteorological, diurnal and tidal changes of the year. To try and see this one small Cornish from the tree with fresh eyes.
Kurt Jackson’s practice of working outside directly with nature creates an immediate contact with his subject, allowing him to respond in spontaneous, dynamic, innovative and exciting ways.
Kurt and his wife stayed at Wheal Call last September for a week and produced most of the work in the exhibition during this time. Wheal Call gave him a unique emotion into the world of the Cape, allowing him to collaborate with the life of the shore, cliff, bay and the coast path. He was lucky with the weather, we had a true Indian summer last September. He loved his time at the cottage and gave us a super painting as a thank you!
Through Jackson’s eyes, this one small stretch of coastline comes to represent the visual and environmental dynamics of the island we call home.
